- Electron tomography -
Electron tomography (ET) is a three-dimensional (3D) transmission electron microscopy (TEM/STEM) imaging method using similar 3D reconstruction algorithms to those of X-ray computed tomography (CT). ET has been developed first in the field of biology. Recently, there have been many applications of ET in the area of materials research where there have been attempts of various imaging modes of TEM/STEM. However, there are unsolved issues of ET: a significant amount of electron-beam irradiation during a tilt-series dataset acquisition; artifacts due to information loss at high specimen-tilt angles, so-called missing-wedge problem; influences of dynamical diffraction and electron-beam absorption in a sample; the existence of subjective processes in 3D image visualization, etc. The Hata group is now working on the development and application of ET techniques for unveiling unknown characters of nanostructure in crystalline materials such as metals and alloys.

- Automated crystal orientation mapping by TEM -
As a method for mapping distributions of phases and crystal orientations in a polycrystalline sample, there has been extensive use of electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) in a scanning electron microscope (SEM). We perform such crystal-phase-and-orientation mapping at a higher spatial resolution using TEM. This technique is called TEM-Automated Crystal Orientation Mapping (TEM-ACOM). Many researchers began to notice its promising performance. NanoMEGAS, a Belgium company, has succeeded in commercial distribution of the TEM-ACOM system, which is known as ASTAR. The ASTAR TEM-ACOM system enables to perform scanning precession electron diffraction (SPED) which gives quasi-kinematical diffraction intensities and strong excitation of more diffraction spots with medium-to-high indices. The combination of TEM-ACOM and SPED has provided a significant improvement in the pattern matching between an experimental diffraction pattern and a calculated kinematical diffraction pattern. The Hata group tries to utilize the TEM-ACOM-SPED technique for the development of novel nanostructural analysis methods for crystalline materials.
Related publications are as follows:
- Order-disorder transformation -
Order-disorder transformation (ODT) is one of the phase transformations in crystalline solids. In an ordering alloy A-B, atoms A and B are randomly arranged on a fundamental crystal lattice above a critical temperature (A-A-B-A-..), Tc, while atoms A and B regularly arrange below the Tc (A-B-A-B-..). Irrespective of nationality, many famous electron microscopists with their ages more than 50 studied ODTs in the 20 century. For example, in the case of high-resolution TEM imaging of a binary A3B type ordering alloy, visualization of only the minority-atom (B) columns is enough to determine the ordered atomic arrangements. Such a minority-atom column imaging (MACI) using TEM phase contrast does not necessarily need a resolution power achieving atomic column-by-column imaging in the fundamental crystal lattice. Therefore, the nanostructural analysis in ordering alloys is one of the hot research topics in the 20 century. Now, people generally think that there is almost nothing to do in the research of ODT in solids. However, ODT is still an interesting research topic for the HATA group, because ODT phenomena which do not appear in phase diagrams are yet found in some advanced materials, such as Ti-Al, Mg-Al-RE, etc. In addition to modern advanced electron microscopy techniques, modern computational works, such as ab-initio based calculations, are expected to clarify unsolved issues on ODT.
Related publications are as follows:
- Nanostructural analysis of advanced materials -
Electron microscopy reveals a variety and a considerable amount of nanostructures in materials. In other words, a nanostructural feature found in electron microscopy observations may not necessarily be essential for understanding a material property. Thus, electron microscopists learn not only electron microscopy but also materials to be investigated, and contribute to the materials research and development. Hata group participates in collaborative research projects with researchers who are experts of advanced materials research and development. In these research projects, Hata group conducts nanostructural analyses of the advanced materials and develops novel methods of electron microscopy necessary for the nanostructural analysis.
