In our laboratory, we characterize and develop ceramic materials and composites with superior properties and new functionalities for energy and environmental applications. This is done primarily by microstructure and process control. Specifically, we focus on structural ceramics; high-temperature ceramics; thermal/environmental barrier coatings formed by EB-PVD and plasma spraying for gas turbine applications; transparent ceramics; thermoelectric materials; and various composite materials. In addition, we are developing new methods for evaluating the thermal, electrical, optical, and mechanical properties, as well as corrosion resistance, of these materials.
